HECO Potential Rolling Power Outages

Hawaiian Electric successfully avoided rolling outages last night by ramping up generation resources with the help of their dedicated crews. HECO appreciates the cooperation of its customers.

Conserve as much energy as possible

As of July 31, 2024, HECO has sent out a CONSERVATION ALERT and stated "Due to a shortage of generation capacity, Hawaiian Electric may be forced to turn off power to selected areas of Oahu beginning at about 6 p.m." and it may possibly take 3 days.


If needed, the approximately 30-minute outages will rotate through the following areas in this order:

  • Waipahu, sections of Pearl City, Kunia, Ewa Beach
  • Waiawa, Crestview, Mililani, Kunia, Waimalu, Upper Kipapa areas
  • Pearl City, Waimalu
  • Majority of leeward areas
  • Lower Kalihi, sections of Upper Kalihi
  • Kakaako
  • Sections of Kahala
  • Sections of Kaimuki and Kapahulu
  • Majority of Kaimuki, sections of Kapiolani Boulevard and Waikiki
  • University of Hawaii Manoa campus, Manoa
  • Nuuanu and School Street area

Some tips and precautions that you can do are:


BEFORE the scheduled power outage:

  • Turn "OFF" and unplug all sensitive equipment.
  • For refrigerator or freezer, take all necessary measures to protect perishable items. Ensure that the appliance doors are completely closed to maintain proper insulation.
  • Prepare flashlights or other sources of light to help you see in the dark.


DURING the scheduled power outage:

  • Keep your refrigerator or freezer CLOSED to prevent food spoilage. Or minimize the amount of times you open it.
  • Conserve battery life: limit the use of your phone or other electronics.


AFTER the scheduled power outage:

  • Check your food before cooking or consuming.
  • Inspect your equipment and gradually turn on essential items.
