Weather Alert: High Winds and Flooding Until Friday – Stay Safe!

January 31, 2025

What You Need to Know to Stay Safe Over the Next Few Days

High Wind Advisory:

Precautions to take:

  • Secure outdoor items like lawn furniture, trash cans, and decorations that could become projectiles.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel, especially on highways and bridges where winds could be stronger.
  • If you're at home, stay away from windows and doors. High winds can cause flying debris and falling trees or power lines.
  • In case of a power outage, make sure you have flashlights, batteries, and your phone fully charged.

During Flood Advisory:

  • Heavy rain expected, with possible flooding in low-lying areas, near rivers, and around storm drains.

Precautions to take:

  • Don’t drive through flooded streets. Even a small amount of water can make driving hazardous.
  • If you live in a flood-prone area, monitor the weather closely and be ready to evacuate if necessary.
  • Keep gutters clear of debris to reduce the risk of flooding around your home.
  • Avoid walking near fast-moving water. Floodwaters can be deceptively strong and dangerous.

General Safety Tips:

  • Stay informed by checking weather apps or local news updates regularly.
  • If you haven’t already, prepare an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, and important documents.
  • Keep your phone charged and have backup power options in case of outages.
  • Share the info with family, friends, and neighbors, especially those who may be more vulnerable, like the elderly.

What to Do if You’re Affected:

  • If you notice damage to your property or dangerous conditions, report them to local authorities.
  • If you have to evacuate, do so as soon as possible. Follow the instructions from emergency services, and take your emergency kit with you.
  • Once conditions improve, check your surroundings carefully for hazards like fallen trees or downed power lines before going outside.
